NORTH CAROLINA GENERAL STATUTE (NCGS) NCGS 115C-150.5 Article 9B "Academically or intellectually gifted students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both the intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated education services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata and in all areas of human endeavor." The state defines gifted learners this way ... Gifted learners: are students with a variety of academic, intellectual, social, and emotional needs different than those of other children their age, experience, and environment; possess the ability to think with more complexity and abstraction and learn at a faster rate; require challenging, differentiated curriculum and instruction; have different learning needs; have unique social and emotional needs; have needs different than others of their age, experience, or environment; are shaped by their early educational opportunities, which form future learning habits; and need access to an appropriately challenging and engaging education early in their schooling to ensure that their potential is developed and optimized.
Vision for the BCS AIG Program "Our vision is to implement differentiated performance-based academic programs (AIG, Advanced Placement, and Honors) that envelop all strands of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for English, communication skills/reading, and math in grades 4-12. Within these programs are research-based strategies to incorporate multiple intelligences and various learning styles that foster advanced and rigorous learning relevant to our global society."
