WASTE DISPOSAL

WASTE DISPOSAL

Waste disposal dumpsters are managed by the Maintenance Dept.  Disposal of certain items is allowed in the dumpsters due to hazards or bulk.  These items are handled by the in-house personnel or contracted to outside services.  Examples of the outside services include medical waste, asbestos, chemical disposal, and batteries.

A recycle program has been established for all schools and is managed by the county operations group.  Containers are delivered and routinely collected at no cost to the school system.

Bulk material disposal such as furniture must first be evaluated in accordance with the BCS Surplus Property Disposal Policy.  If it is in a condition that warrants some usable value, it will first be placed in an auction for sale.  If it cannot be sold, the item(s) can be disposed at the local landfill.  This is the least desirable option since we must pay a tipping fee of $46 per ton to discard goods.  Exception is given to "White Goods" or appliances since the fee is already paid at the time of purchase.

All surplus property is offered to other district facilities before disposal.  All remaining goods are offered for sale in an internet auction: http://www.govdeals.com/  The public can bid on any of the items after registering at the site which is at no cost.
