5th Quarter is a 30-minute plus period that has been incorporated into the end of the regular school day to help students get extra help in their courses. It is a great opportunity to allow students extra time to finish class work, complete homework and projects, or allow teacher a chance to work on extra labs and hands-on activities to enhance the classroom experience that cannot be completed during regular instructional time. Students who are performing well, at the discretion of their teachers are not required to attend 5th quarter tutoring but may opt to leave campus with parental permission or go to one of the on-campus alternative sites.

In an effort to supplement classroom instruction and provide our students with another level of support NBHS is encouraging the use of Khan Academy instructional videos.  Parents, students, and teachers across the country are discovering the value of the simple videos.  Keep reading to learn more.

Khan Academy is an educational website that aims to let anyone "learn almost anything-for free." Students, or anyone interested enough to surf by, can watch some 2,400 videos in which the site's founder, Salman Khan, chattily discusses principles of math, science, and economics. The videos are generally 7 to 14 minutes long, they consist of a voice-over by Khan describing a mathematical concept or explaining how to solve a problem while his hand-scribbled formulas and diagrams appear onscreen. In addition to these videos, the website offers software that generates practice problems and rewards good performance with videogame-like badges-for answering a "streak" of questions correctly, say, or mastering a series of algebra levels.
