Welcome to Leland Middle -- Home of the Tigers!

Volunteer of the Week: John Carter

Colonel Carter has been a Math and Reading tutor at LMS for a couple of years.  He has worked with mostly 6th graders.  His patience and wisdom have meant the world to the students that he has worked with.  Their skills have been sharpened and their grades have gone up.  Before retirement Colonel Carter was in the army, the corporate world, and self-employed.  His hobbies are traveling and swimming.  Thank you, Colonel Carter, for always being here for us!  We appreciate all that you have done.

Leland Middle School is located in Leland, NC with a population of about 16,000.  Our school is located about 10 minutes from Wilmington, 10 miles from UNCW, and is one of the fastest growing areas in Brunswick County and the state.

Leland Middle was built in 1976 and is the feeder school for North Brunswick High School.  We receive students from Lincoln Elementary, Belville Elementary, and a portion of those attending Town Creek Elementary as well as students re-entering the BCS system from charter and private schools.  Our highly qualified teaching staff serves approximately 800 students in grades 6-8.  In addition to regular academic classes, we offer reading and math support and tutoring, art, PE, band, technology, health sciences, chorus and the only guitar program in Brunswick County's middle schools!  We have AIG and honors level courses for those students who need a different type of academic challenge, including the Math I and Earth Science high school courses.  Students in good academic and behavioral standing participate in a wide range of school clubs and sports.

We are fortunate to have a Success Coach and Peer Court facilitator through the Communities in Schools program.  These programs serve and support a variety of students in the school.

LMS students are expected to show Tiger Spirit at all times as they participate in our PBIS and Rachel’s Challenge initiatives.  Our motto is that we Learn, Mature and Succeed in all that we do so that we can prepare ourselves for success in high school and life.  Learning to work together, treat each other and our school respectfully, and do our best in all that we attempt to do in and out of classrooms is our focus and direction each day.  Our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program applauds students who are making good choices and creating the learning environment that we desire.  Celebrating success is an important part of pushing ourselves to succeed!

Last year we launched our Facebook page which has been an outstanding source of information for parents.  We attempt to keep it current with photos, activities, and information.  At 5:00 on Sunday evenings I send out a weekly telephone and email message with our “Weekly Update” of the coming events.  Please consider being part of our LMS volunteer family . . . we would love to have your help as we educate your children together!

Again, welcome from our LMS family as you join Leland Middle School and become a proud Tiger!
