• ASTHMA MANAGEMENT AT SCHOOL

Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.  For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack.  Asthma can't be cured, but its symptoms can be controlled. Because asthma often changes over time, it's important that you work with your doctor to track your signs and symptoms and adjust treatment as needed (Mayo Clinic, 2015).

In order for the child with asthma to receive appropriate medical care at school the parent must provide:

      1. Asthma Emergency Action Plan- completed by the parent

      2. Physician Authorization for Medication Form- completed by the physician, signed by the parent

      3. Asthma medication as recommended by the physician

All items listed above must be UPDATED EACH SCHOOL YEAR.  Remember, without a health care plan in place for your child the school will be forced to call 911 in the event of an emergency.
