    1st Grade

Welcome to 1st grade at Virginia Williamson Elementary School! We have an awesome team of teachers who are looking forward to working together to make this an exciting and successful year for your child! We are big on communication so look for newsletters and updates from us, and please let us know if you have any questions.

    Positive Behavior Plan

Our goal in the classroom is to promote positive behavior through positive language. Students will earn stingray bucks for behaviors that show respectfulness, responsibility, and safety. They will use their bucks to “shop” from the classroom treasure box or the school store. If any behaviors occur that need to be addressed we will write a note or contact you by phone. Please feel free to contact us at any time. If you are communicating with us through email, please keep in mind that due to our very busy day we may not check our messages until after school. Therefore, if you need us to receive a message sooner, please send in a note or call the school and leave a message.

    Please join our Class Dojo!

Our school uses Class Dojo to communicate with families and to help monitor student behavior. Class Dojo is an interactive reward system that allows you to see how your children are behaving in school and to communicate with your teacher.  After you have signed up, you will be able to see what your child is doing in school through the ‘Class Story’ feature, message your teacher directly and see what positive points your student is earning throughout the day. We also post important class and school announcements here, so it is essential that you get connected with this free app. Download the app on your smartphone or tablet. Then use the class code provided by your teacher to join her specific class.

  • First Grade Homework

    • First grade students should read aloud to an adult each night for at least 20 minutes. An adult should record the books they read in their reading log.

    • Students should also practice spelling/writing their weekly Letterland spelling words and practice reading their first grade sight words.

    • Students may occasionally have an additional math practice or fluency practice sheet.

  • First Grade Lunch

     11:10 - 11:50

Each classroom teacher has their own assigned 30 minutes for lunch. Breakfast and lunch are free to all students this year! Please let us know if you are planning on checking your child out of school during our lunch time, please send in a note so that we can have your child packed up before leaving for the cafeteria.

  • First Grade Recess

    2:40 - 3:10

Please make sure that your child comes to school dressed appropriately and prepared to spend time outside. Students are not allowed to stay in for recess so if they come to school without long sleeves or a jacket on a cooler day, it makes it very uncomfortable for the child. We also want to keep our little ones as healthy as possible! Wearing appropriate shoes will also help, as the playgrounds are covered with wood chips.
