Mrs. Banester

Welcome to the Dolphin's Art Page!

First off, I am so excited to get to share my love of art with all of our wonderful students here at Southport Elementary!

A little about Mrs. B - The Art Teacher

Art has always been an important part of my life and something that I share with my family and friends. I studied art throughout high school - ceramics, photography, drawing, stained glass, jewelry making and more. I continued my art studies at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC with a focus on photography, painting and sculpture. I love art so much that I went back to school at Coastal Carolina in Conway, SC (close to Myrtle Beach) where I received my Masters Degree so that I could teach art (certified K-12). I moved here to North Carolina in 2011 and I finally feel like I have found my home!

A little about Mrs. B - The Artist

Not only do I love to teach, but I also continue to create my own works of art outside of school. In my free time I really enjoy painting, drawing and building things with my hands! Last summer I painted some surfboards for my close friends' wedding! Click on the wedding surfboards link below to take a look! Currently I am working on a large scale painting for my brother and sister-in-law, to put in their new house! You can take a look at the work in progress by clicking the link below!

  • Year in Review

Posted by Lisa Banester on 6/15/2018

Wow!! I can't believe it's already been another year, and what a busy year it's been!

First off, this year started out with a new Smartboard for the art room!! THANK YOU Southport Elementary and PTA!! Boy did we use this a lot!

    The new Smartboard!

Then I got to go to the NCAEA conference in Wilmington! What an amazing opportunity that was - it helped put me on the path to using more technology in the classroom by starting to create videos and a YouTube channel to use in class. There is a link to my YouTube channel above - Feelin' Artsy with Mrs. B.

I also participated in a Hot and STEAMy workshop with Acacia Dixon in December, where I learned to do some basic coding. I experimented with Sphero robotics and brought them back with me into the art room. The kids really loved drawing and painting with a robot!

This has certainly been the year of technology for me and the art room, because this fall I completed more than 1CEU in our new digital learning competencies, and earned/won a set of 5 chromebooks for the classroom!!! I am busy creating breakout rooms and virtual fieldtrips for us to explore next year!

And lastly, my mom came and helped me out at the end of the year to prepare the art room for the new HVAC system that our school is getting this summer. I'm pretty sure my room is officially "disaster proof"!!!

Check out some pictures in the art room gallery!!

Looking forward to another amazing and exciting year next year.

I hope everyone has a wonderful summer - see you soon!

I feel like the luckiest teacher alive! This past weekend I had the great opportunity to go to the North Carolina Art Educators' Association conference right here in Wilmington! This was an amazing conference where I got to take lots of workshops to help me become a better art educator!

Some of the classes I got to take included:

    - Cameraless Photography

    - Co-teaching with yourself (using technology and videos for instruction)

    - Stick puppets and literacy

    - Using circuits in art

    - Watercolor "En Plein Air" on Wrightsville beach

Here are some pictures/videos from my experiences:

What a great weekend, and I can't wait to bring to my classroom some of what I've learned!
