Meals, foods and beverages sold or served in the USDA School Meals Programs meet state and federal requirements based on the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. All meals, foods and beverages are prepared and served by qualified child nutrition professionals. Students are provided with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet their health and nutrition needs.
What is School Lunch?
Students are offered a variety of choices each day. Brunswick County Schools Child Nutrition practices Offer vs Serve in our cafeterias. Under the Offer vs Serve program, a student may select 3, 4 or 5 components to make a reimbursable meal; however, one of the selected components must be a fruit or vegetable. A student pays a la carte prices when there are less than three components or no fruit or vegetable on the tray because the USDA will not subsidize the cost of the incomplete meal. The five components of the school lunch are: milk, meat, bread/grain, fruits and vegetables. Some food items may contain more than one component (for example: chicken and noodles is a meat and a grain).
