Screen Use in the Classroom
Screen Use in the Classroom
A Statement from the Brunswick County Schools Digital Learning Team
Our Philosophy: Purpose and Intention
Technology is an integrated part of our students' learning, communication, and daily lives. The BCS Digital Learning Team is dedicated to helping students develop healthy, intentional, and developmentally appropriate digital habits. Healthy technology use depends on instructional design, purpose, and shared responsibility rather than strict time limits alone.
Defining Screen Use in Our Classrooms
To effectively guide our students, we categorize screen use into two primary modalities based on NCDPI frameworks:
- 1. Passive Screen Use
- Passive screen use is any activity where the student is primarily the consumer of content, with little to no interaction, decision-making, or creation.
- Passive use is not inherently negative. It becomes purposeful passive use when it is intentionally aligned with learning goals, such as accessing reading materials, using accessibility tools, or listening to complex texts.
- It becomes a concern when it is unstructured, prolonged, or serves as a "default filler" rather than an intentional activity. We must establish boundaries to ensure it does not "crowd out" physical movement, face-to-face interaction, or sleep.
- 2. Active Screen Use
- Active screen use includes activities where students actively engage with technology to think, create, problem-solve, communicate, or make decisions. In these moments, the student, not the screen, drives the experience.
- This supports learning by engaging students in higher-order thinking, giving opportunities for feedback, and building real-world digital literacy skills.
- Even active screen use requires boundaries. Excessive or unstructured active use can lead to cognitive overload, mental fatigue, and distraction if students are managing too many competing demands.
Shared Responsibility Across the School Community
Healthy technology habits develop when expectations are clearly explained, consistently enforced, and modeled by adults. Grounded in NCDPI guidance, responsible screen use is a shared responsibility among educators, students, and families:
- Adult Modeling
- What is expected of students should be modeled by teachers and staff. When adult modeling is consistent, technology rules feel intentional rather than arbitrary.
- Student Accountability
- Including students in conversations about technology norms builds transparency, trust, and self-regulation. When young people understand the why behind expectations, they are far more likely to internalize them.
- Consistency Across Settings
- Core expectations for technology use should remain stable across different classrooms to help students transfer responsible habits from one environment to another.
How the BCS Digital Learning Team Can Support You
Shifting the culture from passive consumption to purposeful creation requires a collaborative effort. The BCS Digital Learning Team is available to support school leaders, educators, and families through:
- Co-Planning & Instructional Design
- Partnering with teachers to design lessons that move students from passive use to active, creative, and problem-solving tech integration.
- Establishing Classroom Boundaries
- Helping educators implement clear routines, common language, and transitions to manage screen time effectively and prevent digital distraction.
- Student Autonomy & Mentorship
- Providing resources and frameworks to engage students in dialogue about their digital habits, fostering self-regulation rather than simple compliance.
Family & Community Engagement
Assisting schools in communicating expectations to families and providing resources to support consistent, healthy digital habits at home.
Reach out to your school's assigned BCS Digital Learning Specialist or contact our team directly to schedule a planning session or professional development workshop. Together, we can ensure technology supports learning without overtaking it.
