Employee Assistance Program
Brunswick County Schools offers an easily accessible, confidential, and free-of-cost Employee Assistance Program to all benefit-eligible employees. These problems may include, but are not limited to: health, marital relationships, family, financial, substance abuse, or emotional concerns. Information about the contact with an employee is not released without their written consent. Appointments are completely confidential to both the employer and other BCS staff.

Life Insurance
Colonial Life Insurance– BCS provides $5,000 term life coverage through Colonial Life to every employee. Employees can purchase additional coverage for themselves ($10-150 thousand) through Colonial Life on an age-based after-tax premium. Dependent coverage is also available at a standard after-tax premium.

For full-time employees, Brunswick County Schools offers an opportunity to participate in a Flexible Benefits Plan. Benefits available to employees under the Plan include Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Cancer and Specified Disease Insurance, and Medical and Dependent Care Expense Reimbursement. New employees will receive an email from the Benefits Specialist that contains enrollment links. Enrollment must be completed within 30 days of hire.
Leave Accrual
Annual Leave
The amount of leave earned is based on the length of total State service (full-time employees, prorated for part-time employees). Employees must be assigned at least 20+ hours a week to earn leave. Leave amounts are indicated below:

Annual Leave may not be used on days when students are in session for any position that requires a substitute. No more than 30 days of annual leave can be carried over from the end of one calendar year into another. If the employee separates, payment for accumulated annual leave cannot exceed 30 days.
At the end of the calendar year, any annual leave exceeding 240 hours is credited to the employee’s sick leave account.
Personal Leave
Personal leave is earned only by permanent full-time or part-time classroom teachers and media specialists who require substitutes. Personal leave is earned at the rate of .20 days for each full month of employment, not to exceed two days per year and five days maximum. Part-time classroom teachers and/or media specialists employees earn pro-rated personal leave.
All personal leave must be requested 5 days in advance and authorized by the immediate supervisor, and you must be in a leave-eligible position to use it.
Sick Leave
Sick leave is earned by all permanent employees at the rate of one (1) day for each month the employee works at least half of the month.
At the time of retirement, one month of creditable service is allowed for each 20 days of accrued sick leave and one more month for any additional portion (greater than one hour). There is no limit on the amount of sick leave that can be counted as service.

- At the completion of civic responsibility, submit proof of attendance to supervisor.

- Submit form to supervisor for review at least 5 days in advance of requested absence.

FMLA
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
The FMLA entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave.

Workers' Compensation
Retirement
The State’s retirement system is a benefit for permanent full-time employees, with costs shared by the employee (6%) and the Employer (24.67%). Deductions are on a pre-tax basis. At retirement, employees can receive monthly payments for life (based on salary, age, and years of creditable service) or can receive a contribution refund. Employees can also request a contribution refund upon separation from employment. Contributed funds earn 4% interest after five years of employment.
