In accordance with G.S. 95-28.3 and State Board of Education policy, Brunswick County Schools will provide Child-School Involvement Leave for all employees who are parents, guardians, or persons standing in loco parentis to attend or otherwise be involved in their child’s school.
Employees are eligible to receive up to eight hours of paid parental involvement leave if the child is currently enrolled in Brunswick County Schools (LEA #100).
If the child is not enrolled in BCS, employees will receive up to four hours of unpaid leave per fiscal year and may opt to substitute their own eligible accrued leave.
Child-School Involvement Leave requirements:
- The leave must be taken at a mutually agreed upon time between the employer and the supervisor.
- The employee may be required to submit a written request at least 48 hours in advance of the desired leave time.
- The employer may require written verification from the child’s school that the employee attended or was otherwise involved during the requested time.
- If the time requested equals a half-day or more, the employee must use eligible accrued leave (e.g., annual or personal leave) or unpaid leave to cover the absence.
- In accordance with 16 N.C.A.C. 6C.0405, the superintendent may, at their discretion, grant a leave of absence without pay if accrued leave is not used or available.
