BCS JROTC Programs Among Best Worldwide

We are proud to announce that all Brunswick County Schools JROTC programs retain “Honor Unit with Distinction” status after going through scheduled JROTC Program of Accreditation (JPA) Inspections by the U.S. Army’s Cadet Command, 4th Brigade, Fort Bragg, NC.  


South Brunswick received a score of 95.5%, West Brunswick followed with a 97.75%, and North Brunswick accomplished the rare feat with a score of 100%.  Less than 50% of all JROTC programs worldwide receive a 95% or higher, less than 10% receive a 97% or higher, and less than .5% receive a 100% score. Inspections are mandatory and scheduled every three to four years.

Since 2005, the Army JROTC program has been accredited by a national accrediting agency known as AdvancED ( As an accredited Special Purpose Program, JROTC must adhere to AdvancED’s Standards for Quality. The standard is to develop and maintain a comprehensive evaluation program emphasizing continuous improvement in teaching and learning.  The inspection is designed to assess primarily in the areas of teaching and learning and is comprised of accreditation criteria which includes cadet participation and the assessment of Instructor portfolios. The Instructor portfolio is designed to show evidence of effective teaching and learning, assessment, professional development, collaborative activities, and continuous improvement efforts.  Cadets are required to create and maintain their own organized portfolio collection of work based on accomplishments, personality, goals, and aspirations. Their portfolios must show evidence of problem-solving, decision making, critical thinking and leadership. Goal- provide insight and information on the Cadet’s personal achievements and growth over time.


In addition to both the instructor and cadet portfolios, the bulk of the school evaluation centers on two separate cadet planned, developed and implemented projects- the Staff Continuous Improvement and Service Learning presentations.  The Staff Continuous Improvement project, worth 35 points centers on selecting a subject area in the JROTC program worthy of improvement, and through a methodical problem solving process, identify the issues and select courses of action to fix / improve.  The Service Learning project is worth 20 points and is focused on service learning gained in the classroom and implemented in the form of a community service project to benefit a predetermined recipient or organization. Rounding out the inspection process, cadets were evaluated on a Color Guard routine, and either a platoon drill routine, or platoon uniform inspection.


All Brunswick County Schools JROTC programs have been actively preparing for the past three to four years and the efforts have paid off in a huge way.  The success of our JROTC programs here in Brunswick county is directly contributed to the outstanding support received from the Brunswick County Schools leadership; school principals, teachers, staffs; and local communities.
