Board Brief: September Committee Meetings
BOARD BRIEF September 17th, 2019 Committee Meetings
(In attendance: Board Members Ed Lemon, Ellen Milligan, Catherine Cooke, Charlie Miller, Gerald Benton)
Board Meeting:
- The September Board of Education Meeting was held prior to the committee meetings. This was the rescheduled date due to the orginal date of September 3rd beging postponed by Hurricane Dorian. Click HERE to view the Board Meeting via Youtube.
Curriculum Committee:
- Beginning Teacher Support Program. The Director of Professional Development, Jen Damin, presented and requested the 2019-2020 Beginning Teacher Support Program be School Board approved at the October School Board meeting. It is the goal of the Beginning Teacher Support Program to expand and support guidance for beginning teachers, as outlined as a strategy in the 2019-2024 “Here We Grow” BCS Strategic Plan. - School Nurse: School Nurse Supervisor Wanda Willis presented an update on the Nursing Program in BCS. Brunswick County Schools Nursing team supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up. School nurses support student achievement in the learning process by addressing physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs. Currently, Brunswick County Schools employees 12 school nurses and one school nurse supervisor. Click HERE to read her presentation.
- Calendar Revision: Assistant Superintendent Molly White presented the make-up days from Hurricane Dorian and requested approval so that we could get the word out as soon as possible for parents and staff to make adjustments. School Board approved:
- Traditional, Virginia Williamson, Belville and 11 Month Calendar: October 21 and October 28 are now Regular Student Days. Previously, they were a Required Workday(Oct 21) and Early Release(Oct 28).
- Early College High School Calendar: October 10 and October 11 are now Regular Student Days. Previously, they were Required Workday(OCt 10) and Non-Required Workday(Oct 11).
- Graduation Venue Survey: The Chief Communications Officer, Daniel Seamans, presented the survey results regarding the possibility of changing the location of the high school graduations. Nearly 1700 people answered the survey. Every school community had more than 60% in favor of holding graduations at UNCW on June 6th. We have reached out to UNCW to see the date is still available and will update the school communities as soon as we get word. Click HERE for South Brunswick results. Operations Committee:
- Redistricting: The BCS Board of Education approved moving forward with Cropper GIS /McKibben as the consultants for redistricting within the school district. Cropper GIS/McKibben will work to develop 2-3 DRAFT realignment options for Phase 1. These options will be developed to incorporate the new Town Creek Middle School, as well as balance school building utilization across the northern district. Once the DRAFT options are developed, Cropper GIS/McKibben representatives will meet with district staff to review and evaluate the potential boundary plans.
Cropper/McKibben will facilitate a public information session in October(date to be determined), which will provide an overview of the project objectives, process and timeline. Once presented to the board in December, the board will likely vote on a plan in January 2020. We will update you as soon as the time, day and location is confirmed for the October informational meeting at www.bcswan.net/redistricting, as well as via the district wide phone service, the BCS Facebook page, and BCS Twitter feed. Local media outlets will also be alerted to help spread the information as well to garner as much interest from the community as possible.
- Cafeteria Expansion: Craig Eckert of Capital Projects and Planning presented the schematics for the North Brunswick High School Cafeteria improvements. The addition would be located in the front of the school. Planning continues.

- Budget Ammendments: Chief Finance Officer Freyja Cahill presented budget ammendments: Budget Amendments

Human Resources:
- Dual Agreement: Chief Human Resource Officer Steve Foster presented revisions to the Dual Agreement policy with Teacher Assistants and Bus Driving. The revision would exempt staff employed prior to July of 2015 from the new policy to drive a bus as a teacher assistant if they didn't not have a dual agreement signed prior to July of 2015. The revision will be placed on the October Board of Education consent agenda.
