CURRENT STATUS: Coronavirus Impacts on Brunswick County Schools

The first day of the 2020-2021 Traditional School Year for students is August 17,2020.  ECHS begins August 6.
 
Over the Summer, we are working non-stop to get the plans together for the following year and when there is an update involving the schools, we'll continue to get the information out to you via social media, the district website, and via phone call.

On 7/21/2020, the Brunswick County Schools Board of Education voted to begin the 2020-2021 school year with 100% remote learning for all students for the first 4.5 weeks of the school year. An A/B Rotation Plan will follow where students in Group A and students in Group B will rotate face to face and remote instruction so that proper social distancing and safety protocols can be accomplished.  

*Please note, those who signed up for the remote learning option by Thursday, July 23, at 8am will continue remote learning for the entire first semester of the school year.  

 
👉 WHAT'S NEXT:

School Administration and District Administration will continue preparing for a safe and successful remote learning start to the school year.  We now have a better idea of how many students will be returning to face to face instruction after the 4.5 weeks of 100% remote learning to begin the 2020-21 school year. 

  • About 3,500 students/parents/guardians signed up for the full semester of remote learning by the 7/23 deadline. This means about 9,000 students would return to the classroom under an A/B Plan after 4.5 weeks of remote instruction.
The information is being used to develop the best A/B student rotation plan to follow the remote learning timeframe.
Superintendent Dr. Jerry L. Oates will present the A/B DAY Plan to the school board at the August Board of Education meeting for consideration to put the A/B DAY Plan in place after the initital 4.5 weeks of remote instruction.

The daily schedule for remote learning will be determined by the school based on the teacher's schedule.   Schools and district administration will begin putting those plans together now that we know how the 2020-21 school year will begin for ALL students.  Remote Instruction Plans can be found at www.bcswan.net/RemoteLearning.

Chromebook checkout for students who need remote instruction devices will resume the week of August 10th.  More details on pickup schedules will come as soon as they are available.

👉 HOW YOU CAN HELP:  
 
Transportation Survey: We need to begin gathering information on who will need school bus transportation from home to school and back once the district begins an A/B schedule.

 

(An A/B schedule will consist of a mixture of remote learning and face-to-face instruction.)

 

If your child is NOT participating in the 1st Semester 100% Remote Learning opportunity and will be returning to schools when we begin an A/B schedule, please take this short survey:

  
Community Survey: We're putting together a countywide list of open, content-filtered WiFi locations for BCS students and childcare options available for parents on Remote Learning Days. (WiFi locations in Businesses, Churches, Community/Recreation centers)
 
This list will include contact information and locations so that our students/parents know what is available in their part of the county to aid in remote learning days.

SCREENING FOR COVID 19: 
 The NC DHHS has created a reference guide for Suspected, Presumptive, and Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 in K-12 schools.  This breaks down the process for screening and protocols for individuals who are suspected, presumptive, and/or confirmed to have COVID-19.

REOPENING GUIDANCE: NC Public Schools has put together an interactive 'Living Document' that details the current guidance on reopening public schools in our state.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION AND STUDENT TRANSFER REQUESTS: If you have a child who will be in Kingergarten for the 2020-2021 school year, please click HERE for details with online enrollment.  If you would like to submit a student transfer request, please click HERE for the guidelines and required forms to fill out and submit to the school.


STUDENT MEAL PICKUP: The BCS Child Nutrition Department continues to serve thousands of meals a day to our students and we will continue to offer meals to all students during the summer months.   All three high schools will continue to offer breakfast and lunch pick up. We will serve Monday thru Thursday, 11am-1pm, and include meals for Friday and Monday in the pick-up on Thursday.

Parents / Guardians simply need to tell the on-site team how many student meals they need for that day. We will make adjustments and add locations if necessary.
 
We can not open the cafeterias to 'eat in' locations yet due to state health guidelines/restrictions.

COPING WITH CORONAVIRUS IMPACTS:  Brunswick County Schools Behavioral Specialist Tracy Jones has a special message for children.  She, along with a puppet that connects with kids, talk about the Coronavirus and ways that we can cope with it right now, together.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES: BCS Student Support Services has numerous resources to help students and parents during this challenging time we are all going through.  Behavior Specialists, School Counselors, School Psychologist, School Social Workers, and Dropout Prevention Specialists are all available to talk with to support the social-emotional learning and mental health needs during this unprecedented time.

  3. Avoid language that blames others.
  4. Limit screen time on COVID-19. 
  5. Provide honest, age-appropriate info.
  6. Teach actions to reduce spread of germs.
