STATUS UPDATES: Coronavirus Impacts on Brunswick County Schools

6/01/2020: (this information supersedes previous updates)

It's been a challenging end to the school year but we want to thank everyone for adapting to all the changes presented during the COVID19 Pandemic.  Over the Summer, we will be working non-stop to get the plans together for the following year and when there is an update involving the schools, we'll continue to get the information out to you via social media, the district website, and via phone call.

More updates will be coming to you as we receive additional guidance from the NC Department of Public Instruction and other state and federal agencies working with school systems across the state. We truly appreciate your support of Brunswick County Schools.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION AND STUDENT TRANSFER REQUESTS: If you have a child who will be in Kingergarten for the 2020-2021 school year, please click HERE for details with online enrollment.  If you would like to submit a student transfer request, please click HERE for the guidelines and required forms to fill out and submit to the school.

STUDENT MEAL PICKUP: The BCS Child Nutrition Department continues to serve thousands of meals a day to our students and we will continue to offer meals to all students during the summer months.  There will be some changes beginning in June that we want to make sure you are aware of.

The Emergency Funds that have made possible the delivery of food via the school bus will come to an end on May 31. Beginning in June, the district will switch to pick up at locations only. All three high schools will continue to offer breakfast and lunch pick up. We will serve Monday thru Thursday, 11am-1pm, and include meals for Friday and Monday in the pick-up on Thursday.

Parents / Guardians simply need to tell the on-site team how many student meals they need for that day. We will make adjustments and add locations if necessary.

We can not open the cafeterias to 'eat in' locations yet due to state health guidelines/restrictions.

P-EBT BENEFITS: In addition, all students will be receiving additional P-EBT benefits due to BCS' enrollment in the Community Eligibility Provision(CEP) program..  The EBT card will be mailed to the household.  (The CEP is a nutrition program under the National School Lunch Act)

As always, thank you for your continued support of BCS as we grow through this era of adapting together.

Previous message issued 3.13.2020...

As concerns over Coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to increase, please be assured that student and staff safety and protection is of utmost concern to the Brunswick County Board of Education. We are taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of this and any other communicable disease. However, we continue to follow the lead of our state and local public health professionals as we continue to provide a healthy environment in which our students can learn.

We have been in contact with local, state and federal officials and our actions have been based on what we have received from these officials. We have concluded that it is in the best interests of our students that we will cancel all out of county field trips and activities. The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has suspended all athletic events from 11:59pm March 13, until April 6, 2020. Additionally, we have decided to include our middle school athletics in this athletic suspension. This includes all workouts, skill development, practices and contests. Lastly, we are asking for our school volunteers to suspend their efforts for the next two weeks.

We continue to encourage our students and staff to take preventative measures as well. Utilize social distancing techniques whenever possible; wash your hands regularly; clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are frequently touched; cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue; and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. For our staff members, if you have traveled out of the country recently, we expect you to follow the recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to self quarantine for the next 14 days.

-Dr. Jerry L. Oates, Superintendent of Schools

CURRENT STATUS:

This is an evolving situation and we will adjust accordingly but we want you to have the most recent information available.  Here are the current impacts involving Brunswick County Schools effective March 16-April 6:

SCHOOL SANITATION: Brunswick County Schools continues to be proactive in making sure all schools maintain routine sanitation.  Beginning Monday, March 16th, BCS Operations will begin utilizing electrostatic foggers in all schools to disinfect the buildings.  The disinfectant detergent and
deodorant is effective against a large number of bacteria and viruses, including coronavirus.  The cleaning will take place routinely and after school hours while after school events are postponed/canceled.

ALL SCHOOLS:  Schools are currently operating on normal schedules. Students and staff should stay home if they have a fever, used fever-reducing medication, or experienced symptoms of illness within the past 24 hours.   Parents/Guardians need to provide a note to their child's school if they are going to be absent.
