Graduation Update for Class of 2020

(Updated 5/20/2020)

**Editor's Note: At the May 5th, 2020 Board of Education Meeting, Board Members heard from several students in regards to holding a traditional graduation for each high school later in the year.  After discussion, Board Members decided to move forward with the current plan(below) as well as hold a traditional graduation ceremony at a later date to be determined.  The plans and timing of a second graduation will follow guidance from state health officials as to when it is safe for large crowds to gather.**  (Click HERE to watch 5/05/2020 meeting)

Current Plan:

Seniors and Parents/Guardians,

Our high schools continue work on special upcoming graduation services for the Class of 2020 and we wanted to give you an update on some of the components.  This is a historic year and we are preparing a celebration that students will remember their entire lives.  It will be like no other graduation ever before.
School staff will be reaching out to you with more details once the plans are finalized but here are a few of the highlights:
  • The graduation itself will involve students receiving diplomas in small groups at each school.  The size of the group will be determined by the state's guidelines at the time.  There will also be recorded speeches from classmates and special guests involved in the final video.  A production crew will record it all and edit into one full graduation service for each school.  Once the videos are complete, the graduation services will be aired on ATMC TV, as well as a YouTube link of each service to share with family and friends, and each senior will receive a DVD of the services.
  • The initial services where diplomas will be handed out in a formal graduation ceremony atmosphere will take place at each school.  ECHS is scheduled for Friday May 22nd.  NBHS is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th.  WBHS is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th.  SBHS is scheduled for Thursday, May 28th
  • It is anticipated to take 1-2 weeks to put together the completed graduation videos for the four high schools with anticipated TV air dates beginning around the second week of June.
  • School staff will be reaching out to Seniors with more information on the individual graduation services.

We are extremely excited to celebrate this milestone with the Class of 2020.  It is a year like no other student has experienced and we want to make sure each and every Senior gets a chance to walk in their cap and gowns to celebrate the major accomplishment!   Seniors will have a graduation experience like no other student has ever been a part of.

We'll of course make adjustments as needed to ensure the safety of everyone taking part.  More details will come in the days and weeks ahead as we continue to put together the graduation ceremony plans and adapt to the orders of Governor Cooper and state health officials.
