BOARD BRIEF: June Committee Meetings

Brunswick County Schools June 28,2021 Committee Meetings

(In Attendance: Board Members Steve Barger, Ed Lemon, Robin Moffitt, David Robinson, Gerald Benton)

 

Here are the highlights from the June 28th, 2021 Brunswick County Schools Board of Education Committee Meetings:

 

FINANCE COMMITTEE: 

  1. Sereneic Software 3 year agreement:  Recommended approval of new contract put on Consent Agenda for July Board Meeting
  2.  Budget Ammendments approved for State 10, Federal 4, Capital 13, and Special Revenue Fund for fiscal year ending June 30, 2021.

 

HUMAN RESOURCES:

  1. Critical Needs Incentives: Recommended incentives put on Action Agenda for July Board Meeting.

    Recommendations include...
    A) Staff recommends the Board approve the clarification that current employees who
    have not taught in a hard-to-staff area in Brunswick County Schools during the
    2020-2021 school year would be eligible for the incentive and
    B) Staff calculated an estimated cost of $148,557 to provide a retention incentive of
    $1,000 for current employees who continue to teach in hard to staff areas for the
    2021-2022 school year. Staff recommends waiting until the State passes a budget
    before making a final decision on the retention incentive.

 

CURRICULUM:

  1. ESports: Informational presentation of Esports program and the potential benefits of it being implemented in the district.
  2. Summer School:  Update on the launch of the Summer Learning Program
  3. Improvement Plan for SEL/SMH: The Improvement Plan for Social Emotional Learning and School Mental Health was explained in detail.  Recommended approval was put on Action Agenda for July Board Meeting for further discussion.
    The following were put on Consent Agenda for July Board Meeting:
  4. Day Treatment MOU
  5. Speech Solutions Contract
  6. Interim Nursing Contract
  7. School Nurse Funding 
  8. Project Search MOU
  9. Communities in Schools MOU

 

DISCUSSION: Superintendent Dr. Oates presented the results of the Virtual Learning Survey that gauged the interest in a Remote Learning Plan for the upcoming school year.  

  1. With only 2% of the school community showing interest in a 100% remote learning format, the decision was made to not offer it as an option for the 2021-22 school year unless there is an unforeseen circumstance that deems remote learning necessary.  All Brunswick County Schools will resume 100% Face to Face learning for the 2021-22 school year.

 

POLICY: 

  1. Policy 6420 Contracts with the Board had minor update to clarify language(removed duplicate wording)

 

OPERATIONS:

  1. Reverse Osmosis Cooler Update: Board Members approved adding an addtional Reverse Osmosis water station at each High School.  More information will be gathered from Elementary and Middle Schools to determine if any additional water stations will be added.
  2. Vacancy on Brunswick Community College Board of Trustees announced.

  8. WBHS Tennis Courts contract
    The following was put on Action Agenda for July Board Meeting:
  9. Contract approval of SBHS Baseball Field renovations
