Brunswick County Schools Driver’s Education

Required by NC law:
Students under 18 must complete:

  • ✅ 30 hours of classroom instruction

  • ✅ 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving

🎓 Who’s Eligible

  • Must be 14 ½ years old by the first day of class

  • Must register at the high school you attend (during the school year)

  • Charter, Private, and Homeschool students register at the school in your home district

  • Summer Option: You may register at any Brunswick County high school

📋 Step 1: Register for Class

Check your school’s upcoming sessions and register online:

💳 Step 2: Pay the $65 Fee

Pay online before the vision test.

  • Visit the Online School Payments site

  • Click your high school (Charter students select The COAST)

  • Select Driver’s Education Fee

  • Complete payment online

🕒 Class Schedule

  • Most classes = 11 weekdays, 3 hours/day

  • No classes on Fridays (during the school year)

  • Summer: No absences allowed

  • School Year: Only 1 absence allowed

Don't register if you will miss more than one day or cannot be on time.

🚘 Behind-the-Wheel Phase

  • Students are scheduled by age (oldest first)

  • Expect a call 30–90 days after class ends

  • Drives take place after school, evenings, weekends, or before school

  • Each car has 2–3 students

  • Students are picked up/dropped off at the school

📄 On your last drive, you’ll get a Completion Certificate (no expiration)
📄 You’ll also need a Driver Eligibility Certificate (DEC) from your school (expires in 30 days)

🔄 Transfer Students

If you’ve taken Driver’s Ed in another state or school:

  • Contact NC Driving School at 800-375-6550

  • Provide documentation of hours completed

  • Their team will determine NC credit and next steps
